QUIET NIGHTS
01 / Why this matters

A peaceful home should not be a luxury.

Loud motorcycles, modified exhausts and unnecessary revving can create sudden bursts of noise on residential streets. When this happens late at night, it can disrupt sleep, affect family routines and leave parents struggling to settle young children back to rest.

02 / What we are asking for

Technology, accountability and a practical path forward.

We are calling for a measured response that uses reliable technology, clear legal standards and appropriate safeguards.

01 / DETECT

Noise detection cameras

Request that Rhodes be considered for future acoustic camera trials and deployment at identified night-time vehicle-noise hotspots.

02 / ENFORCE

Verified, lawful penalties

Investigate clear standards and validated evidence that could support enforceable infringements, with privacy and review safeguards.

03 / REPORT

Accessible public reporting

Explore a practical way for residents to submit vehicle details and supporting evidence for review by the responsible authorities.

03 / Take action today

KNOW THE RULES

VEHICLE NOISE OFFENCES & POSSIBLE PENALTIES

NSW already has rules covering unnecessary engine noise and excessively noisy exhausts. These are examples of enforcement options that may be relevant to Shoreline Drive — a loud vehicle alone does not prove an offence.

ROAD RULE 291

UNNECESSARY ENGINE NOISE

$434

Potentially relevant to deliberate, unnecessary engine revving. The published penalty also includes 3 demerit points. Evidence of the conduct is needed.

EXHAUST NOISE LIMITS

EXCESSIVE EXHAUST NOISE

$300–$1,200

Published individual penalty tiers depend on how far a vehicle exceeds its applicable exhaust noise limit: under 5 dB, 5–14 dB, or 15 dB and above. A compliant assessment is required.

VEHICLE COMPLIANCE

DEFECTIVE OR NON-COMPLIANT EXHAUST

DEFECT NOTICE

Authorities may require inspection or rectification of a defective or non-compliant exhaust system. The outcome depends on the inspection and relevant requirements.

Why our petition matters: Existing offences do not necessarily mean they are consistently detected or enforced. We are calling for more effective night-time monitoring, lawful enforcement and transparent reporting. Penalties are indicative and may change; actual action depends on the offence, evidence and current law. Noise cameras cannot automatically issue fines without an appropriate legal and evidentiary framework. Source: NSW EPA — Managing motor vehicle noise ↗
